We have Apple Macs - can we still take part?

Great news: this year we have customised the disc so it can work on both PC and Mac, so no new discs are required.

Is there a minimum age of entry?

No, there is no minimum age of entry.

I'm a parent - can my child enter independently?

Yes, they can. There is an entry form for entrants entering independently on the 'How to sign up' page. You will be asked to provide your contact details as well as make a £2.50 charity donation to Brighter Start by credit card. All personal details are entered over a secure link - look for the small padlock on your browser window.

Why are the points not being recorded?

You need to make sure that the following steps are completed after each session:

  1. 1.On the lower right hand corner, click on a button with a curved arrow or foot

  2. 2.Click on the same button till you get a dialogue box with a message:
"Congratulations - you have increased your score from ?? to ?? Do you want to save this?"

  3. 3.Click on the Yes button.

  4. 4.On the lower left hand corner, click on the button with a picture of a man walking back to quit the program completely.

Why are my points going down?

You score points for all correct answers but points are deducted every time you get an answer wrong. You can replay the games until the full amount of points has been won.

My disc is blank!

You need to tell us immediately and we will send a replacement.

How will we get the points to you?

For PC users who are connected to the Internet: scores are automatically recorded on the EuroTalk server when they log out of Talk Now!

For Mac users and those without Internet access: Each Talk Now! CD-ROM records the scores of players using the program and awards bronze, silver or gold certificates for different levels of achievement. Entrants are asked to print out the certificate they have won (which also includes their individual score) and either fax or post it to EuroTalk by the closing date of June 21st.

I have scored the maximum number of points - what do I do now?

Congratulations! You can do no better and you now need to wait for Round One to finish. We’d also suggest that you don’t attempt to play any of the games again (once you’ve scored the full 1800 points) just in case you get questions wrong and your points get taken away from the total score. For Mac and non-internet users, you need to send in your printed certificates, clearly showing your name and score, to us before the deadline of June 21st. The scores of PC users who are connected to the Internet will be automatically recorded on the EuroTalk server.

I have been impressed at how many children in our school were motivated to take part in the competition. They have thoroughly enjoyed the activities, which accommodate all the learning styles, and are now enthusiastic to learn even more languages.  The children have enjoyed competing against each other and monitoring their own scores. We're now planning to install Talk Now Spanish onto our school network to give children more independence in their language learning through ICT.

Alex Wanski, Archbishop Benson School, Truro

Daniel: "It's making languages fun for everyone to learn."

Joseph: " It makes me want to visit all these countries."

Eleanor: "It's been fun and I feel a real sense of achievement."

Mum: "I'll go with Joseph!"
