Instructions for teachers on how to register individual pupils.
Teachers need to register each pupil taking part from their school. This can be done using a JLC disc, the Internet and their teacher’s password, generated on their registration.
-
1.Insert disc into computer and click on the Start arrow.
-
2.Choose the TV region under which your school has registered, and then the name of the school.
-
3.Click on the Teacher’s button, positioned towards the right.
-
4.Select “Register students’ names” and enter your teacher’s password.
-
5.Enter the names of each pupil taking part.
-
6.The system will then generate a password for each pupil, which they will need to use on their JLC disc online. These passwords need to be either copied or printed and given to each pupil.
Firewall instructions
Many schools have firewalls and proxies controlled by the LEA, which unfortunately will block the software from connecting to our servers. What is required is for the Network Administrator to contact their LEA to have the following jlc.eurotalk.com (77.107.81.155) access so that the students can connect to us. With this in mind another issue will arise where teachers are registering students for the competition. If you are unable to register students then please send the names of the pupils taking part to jlc@eurotalk.com and we will create passwords for them. Please include the name of the school and a fax number, so we can respond straight away.
Proxy instructions
If you need to connect to us via a Proxy Server, then set your system up as follows:
-
1.Edit the file config.txt in directory “C:\Program Files\EuroTalk Interactive\EuroTalk Junior Language Challenge” (or similar), and change the line AutoConnect=1 to AutoConnect=0.
-
2.Run the JLC software, and attempt to connect – you should get a “Connect to EuroTalk” dialog. Press the Advanced button to get extra information as shown:

Type in the information required under “Proxy”, then press the Save button. Click on “OK” to test.
3. Having done this on a workstation, you can then edit Config.txt to get rid of Debug=1, and restore AutoConnect=1.
The file HTTPSiteList.txt will have been modified by this procedure. You can copy the modified file onto other workstations to save having to do this procedure over again.
Installation on a simple school network
If you have a straightforward network, you may wish to install the Junior Language Challenge to run in a shared folder, which can be read-only. You can do this as follows:
1.Insert the CD in a system with write-access to the shared folder you want to use.
2.The TalkNow program or the normal install program may auto-boot. If so, just exit.
3.Run the installer NetInstall.msi off the CD, and follow the prompts.
4.You may need to configure your firewall to allow communication, or set up to use a proxy server – see how to do this above.
Installation on RM Connect or similar
If you need to install on something like an RM Connect network, we suggest you try something like the following:
1.Use the standard RM procedure for installing a multi-media title to install TalkNowJLC on the network, using the normal Install.msi.
2.To stop the system trying to save scores on the local machine if the server is not available, edit the file Config.txt in the program directory and change the line
AllowOffline=1
to
AllowOffline=0
3.You may need to configure your firewall to allow communication, or set up to use a proxy server – see how to do this above.
Reverting to old method using port 42424 (PC ONLY)
If you managed to connect to us successfully last year, but the new connection method does not seem to be working, you have the option to revert back. You will need to edit the file config.txt in directory “C:\Program Files\EuroTalk Interactive\EuroTalk Junior Language Challenge” (or similar), and change the line HTTP=1 to HTTP=0
