The icons are missing because your screen resolution is lower than 1024 x 768.

To change this setting, go to ‘System Preferences’ (in the Dock or under the Apple logo in the top left of your screen). Select ‘Displays’ and choose ‘1024 x 768’ or a higher resolution. 

Now run the program again.
